- His name and his family's religion (Catholic) are as "French" as he gets. Otherwise, he is very, very much an Englishman. Probably knows some French from his old high school classes, but he's not exactly a linguist here.

- came from a blue collar working class family

- family: distant father with a drinking habit and physically demanding job, perpetually harried mother, middle child out of five rowdy brothers

- fought a lot with his brothers, never all that close with his family. had lots of friends and girlfriends though. he's not exactly the epitome of charm and charisma, but he's been good with people his whole life.

- his parents died when he was in his late 20s, and he can't claim to be all that friendly with his brothers even as an adult. he's probably the most 'successful' out of all of them, though they're not exactly poorly off. they're more like their father - blue collar physically demanding jobs. not that his job isn't physically demanding or DANGEROUS AS FUQ, but at least he gets to show up on the telly now and then.

- he's awful at handling the press, by the way, because they irritate the heck out of him. though he tries. donovan helps.

- had bit of a rebellious streak in his teens (attempt for attention!) , dang punk hooligan with a smart mouth and a heavy fist

- but always had a strong sense of justice and was probably the kid on the playground picking fights with bullies and somesuch

- 'straightened out' by graduation

- but continued his drinking, partying night life style for some time even after academy

- married v. young to a waitress, had two daughters with her.

- the first baby was kind of an accident, so he worked super fucking hard to get promotions and shit

- because of that, he became v good at taking shit from his superiors (and later on, sherlock), though he still had a bit of trouble weaning off the habit of giving shit back

- (he's probs just more good at being subtle with it, i mean he is pretty dang sassy)

- his dedication to his job and to the pubs strained his marriage and his relationship with his daughters a whole fuckin lot until eventually she left him and took the kids with her

- his daughters used to pret much openly resent him, but ok one is in law school and one joined the navy, so it's obvious that despite his general lack of PRESENCE for much of their lives, he influenced their strong sense of justice.

- after his promotion to detective inspector, he married a second time to a school teacher. currently has no children with her.

- probs never will, cause this marriage is failing too oops. he's always at work or at the pubs, and she's sleeping with her co-worker!

- when he's at home, he sleeps in the guest room.

- he tried getting a dog, but that strained relations with his wife even more, so he gave it away to his youngest daughter (the law school one).

- his team is basically his family now.

- it's funny that he's shitty managing his own personal life, but is rather adept in keeping his team together.

- by funny i mean kind of sad, of course

- lestrade was one of two who actively helped sherlock through his addict stage. he met sherlock when the younger man was high as a kite and trespassing (and consequently solving) a crime scene.

- the other of the two was mycroft, who no doubt encouraged lestrade to help sherlock and helped soothe out some of the legal kinks.

- speaking of mycroft, mycroft has his number, and lestrade has his. lestrade never asked for this exchange though, it just kind of happened because mycroft is mycroft.

- mycroft probably has a key to his house and that's kind of terrifying.

- though to be fair, lestrade has a key to sherlock's now (MYCROFT...), but he never uses it. it's personal.

- he insists he is not sherlock's babysitter, though.

- despite the fact that while recovering, sherlock has crashed at his place more than once.

- his wife hates sherlock lmao.

- honey your addict is here at the door

- lestrade quit smoking around the same time sherlock quit hard drugs

- when sherlock gets tired of lestrade's drug busts, he sometimes brings up lestrade's drinking problem.

- going to far with lestrade is bringing up his drinking problem or his wife's infidelity or his daughters

- sherlock has never once apologized him, but he has made it up to lestrade in his own weird socially inept way

- not that lestrade would care - or at least show it, because he very much tries to live up to some sorta machismo

- you have no idea how much of a relief watson was, i mean really

- after DRUG BUSTS, mrs hudson always invites lestrade to tea and lestrade almost always accepts.

- watson and him go to the pub together sometimes.

- watson may or may not be his doctor too. or at least, he goes to the same clinic where watson sometimes works.

- secretly, lestrade thinks some of sherlock's comments are hilarious. i mean it's FRUSTRATING, and RUDE, and HURTFUL A LOT OF THE TIME, but sometimes it's like when a kid you're in charge of says something witty but INAPPROPRIATE AS HECK and you're struggling between wanting to laugh and wanting to drag em out by the ear.

- lestrade is proud of his daughters and of the members on his team. legitimately proud.

- sherlock, too.

- overall an honest, reliable, hardworking fellow of above average intelligence

- he's not a genius, but he's still pretty up there in the yard ok

- he still listens to punk rock
